The number one reason for beginners quitting guitar shortly after starting is an improperly set up instrument. The beginner will say that it’s just too hard and this applies to any age beginner. Because of the improper set up the strings will be very far away from the fret board. This takes much more hand strength and effort to execute single notes and chords.

When a beginner acquires his or her first guitar it should immediately set up by a qualified tech. This should include (but not limited to: Cleaning the frets and conditioning the fret board, checking all electronics if the guitar is so equipped, tighten any loose hardware, setting the string height (action), adjusting the intonation so the guitar plays in tune, adjusting the neck with the truss rod for proper relief and a new set of strings.

String gauge can affect the ease of playing for a beginner as well. I would always suggest a gauge that is a little on the lighter side to get started. This is taken on a case by case basis because a hefty construction worker could probably get away with a bit heavier gauge string as compared to a young child.

In the end the guitar should play easily, play in tune and stay in tune while playing. I always like to say that it’s guitar playing and not guitar working. A properly set up instrument will give a beginner the best shot at getting started playing guitar.

Testimonials:
David Nicholas - The 20watt amp is sounding fantastic! Delivered the goods at the gig and I'm finding cool tones all over the place with it. Love the cab w Emenince Tonkerlites too- perfect for my sounds! Makes the 12 string sound like a grand piano!
Peter Lacis - I had an audition for something recently that was all about Led Zeppelin I -- my custom Pennalizer BLEW THE MINDS of the guys I was playing with. They couldn't believe the sounds coming out of that amp. That album was never in my mind when I came up with the idea....so that's yet another testament to the amazing work that you do.
Scott Goldberg - I am very satisfied with the set-up, and the fast turn around.  With the "lower" action it feels easier to play.  I will definitely spread the word.
